During your college career you will take a variety of classes in the humanities social sciences sciences and other fields. Though the demands for these courses will vary widely in each of them you will need to find and evaluate the credibility (ethos) of primary and secondary resources research sources for your own writing and use them to help you explain your ideas. These skills which teachers and librarians often refer to as information literacy skills will be necessary in virtually every class you take including this one.Step One: Conduct research regarding your topic primarily using the library databases. Gather materials that may be useful to you in writing the full paper. As you read these sources consider how they relate to your own opinions.
Step Two: Write a citation for each source using MLA style. Be careful to follow the guidelines in Easy Writer or from the library resources exactly paying attention to every period and comma.
Step Three: For each source write a paragraph that summarizes the source. This is the first of two paragraphs youll write for each source. Each paragraph should be about five to eight sentences for a total of ten to sixteen sentences written about each source.
In both of your paragraphs about each source try to address these questions in a unified way not simply by answering each question one at a time. Depending on the reading you may need to adjust these questions to fit the writing you re discussing.Paragraph # 1
1. What is the authors subject matter In other words what is the general topic that the writer addresses
2. What is the authors thesis or his /her idea or proposition
3. What are the main sub-points that the author introduces
Step Four: For each source write another paragraph that evaluates the source.
Paragraph # 2
1. What type of evidence does the author use (anecdotal personal reflection statistical textual analysis) For what purpose does the author seem to use these sources
2. How credible are the sources the author is using More specifically do you think that the type of evidence the writer uses would be considered credible by the reader
3. Based on your answers to the two previous questions how credible is the source
4. How will you utilize this source in your paper
