The Renaissance had many “key players” such as Brunelleschi, Alberti, Michelangelo, Bramante, Palladio, even Leonardo da Vinci. If you had to chose a single person as most fully embodying the principles of the Renaissance, who would it be? Defend your choice of one of the above named men, or argue for someone else who was discussed in our text. The second part of this discussion is to find an example in contemporary building (this could be a building in your community, on campus, etc.) that proves your “key player’s” principles are still in use today.Be sure to make specific points of comparison between your modern example and Renaissance architecture/principles/etc. from our text.
Before posting your comments, read this article
(a reprint from the Wall Street Journal), which discusses some of Michelangelo’s key works and considers them in the context of contemporary architecture, including the work of Zaha Hadid. While I’m not looking for you to pick Michelangelo as your key player necessarily, this article demonstrates how to make connections between historical and contemporary designs. However, please feel free to be creative this week in how you relate your “key player’s” architecture to your contemporary example.
