h‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ave been selected for the Elizabethan theater group for your reports on Hamlet. This will focus more on historical knowledge than the play itself, but try to relate it to the play when possible. A few notes to help you along: 1. Women were not allowed on the stage, so the roles of women were played by young boys 2. This was a time of Puritan censorship – it was not the social event like it is today. In fact, very few women went because there were many pickpockets and “ladies of the evening” who hung around the theater. What we now call the “nosebleed” section was actually preferred, because the upper rows were covered by a canopy, while the rest of the audience had to sit in the open air, regardless of the weather. Very poor people (called groundlings) stood directly in front of the stage, which was not very clean, as thi‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍s was where many people would throw their trash. If you are familiar with the phrase and website Rotten Tomatoes, when people didn’t like the play or actors, they would throw rotten food at the stage. 3. The Globe Theater was started in part by Shakespeare and The King’s Men. Since most people didn’t read or write, flags were used to tell the potential audience what type of play was to be performed: white meant a comedy, black was a tragedy, and red was a history. 4. Theaters and universities were often shut down due to the Bubonic Plague. Now you have something in common with Shakespeare! 5. There were no microphones or other technology, so the plays presented were usually very simple. As a matter of fact, the first Globe burned down when they tried to use a special effect.
