Please be sure to do the following in your final essay: Formulate a thesis and argument that can be presented and supported within the limits and scope of the assignment. It should provide the backgrounds of the conversation as part of outlining your contribution. It should also make an effort to anticipate and answer potential objections to your argument. Although you are writing for a specific audience, you will also need to simultaneously be writing for an educated, though general (i.e., non-specialist) audience. Part of what you will want to do when you introduce your topic and argument is explain the particular way that the community with which your research engages views our theme, or how you have chosen to interpret it through your research. On a more “local” level, it also means that you should explain any words or concepts that may not be understood by a more general academic audience. Cite at least seven sources (preferably in a variety of ways: in support of your claims, for counterargument, etc.), at least five of which should be scholarly sources. When you turn in your essay, you will also need to include a brief cover letter that includes the following information (written either in paragraphs or as a list): A description of the group you hope to persuade and why you chose to imagine that group as your audience An explanation of the specific details in your essay that would make it persuasive to this group (the style, methodology, particular claims that you are making, appeals to logos, ethos, pathos, etc.) will need a rough draft of 1,500 words minimum on 11/19/20
