Students will write a final essay with an argumentative thesis that engages one of the major themes or questions of the twentieth century (e.g. the meaning of suffering, morality, human nature, existentialism, gender, colonialism, etc.). You should incorporate in-depth readings of two texts from this semester in your essay. No secondary sources allowed. The central argument of this paper should not simply be a recapitulation or comparison of the two authors’ views. Rather, your central thesis should consist of your own original assertion—a plausible and arguable claim that draws upon these two authors’ insights, while also going beyond them to make your own argument.
