The juxtaposition of the title reflects not only two different continents, but also two very different cultures. I chose African Samurai by Thomas Lockley and Geoffrey Girard because I was curious to see how an African man ties into the advancement of Asia. We have mainly been focusing on Asia and its culture, I feel this book will bring a better understanding of the multicultural aspects of Asian maritime history. During this time, many Asians had never seen a black man before. African Samurai will give perspective on being a black man in the sixteenth century Japan. It tells the story of how a kidnapped child from Northeast Africa would later end up traveling across Asia, learning new languages and cultures, before becoming a samurai for the most power clan in Japan. The color of Yasuke’s skin likened him to the “black-skinned Buddha” and caused many Japanese to be drawn to him. This helped him to move up in Japanese society much easier. The book gives an untold look at the experiences of a black man through not only many different Asian cultures and countries, but different classes as well. Yasuke, kidnapped as a child, begins as a servant and through his experiences, ends as a warrior. I will discuss how race and other cultural barriers affect Yasuke in feudal Japan and his experiences through the different castes, countries, and cultures affected his rise from servant to samurai. ” The review must be 4-6 pages (at least 1000 words minimum), preferably typed in Times New Roman 12 pt font. Reminder, the title page does not count as part of neither the required page limit, nor the bibliography or works cited page if included. ALL papers must be double-spaced. A student may be asked to rewrite a paper or lose points: does not follow the page or minimum words requirement, single-spaced, the review does not explain or relate to the book, or if the paper is not written in the student’s own words. The purpose of the paper is to show that students under‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍stand the history of Asia as it pertains to the main premise or themes written in the book and the topics and issues addressed and related to during class lectures. Thus the review must not be a summary of each chapter or story in the book. However, a brief summary of interesting parts of the book may be presented in the introduction of the paper. The review must discuss and relate to the contents of the book, especially, main points that the author may be addressing and students must include in the contents of the paper. When completing the review students may choose to write of: the strengths and weaknesses of the book, likes and dislikes about the main themes, or focus on one or two areas of interest that may span from cultural and traditional and historical elements that were discussed in the book. For example, if the book talks about a particular time period, Gupta Dynasty and its Golden Age in the history of India and it has been discussed in class or read in the textbook, this may be synthesized in the review. Any direct quotes from the book or outside sources, . the Internet, books, journal articles, MUST provide citation, page number and name of the reference. In that case, a bibliography or works citation page is required. Although no extensive research is necessary for this report, the more information that is provided will only enrich the contents of the review. Therefore, if additional information is included beyond the quotes from the book, provide footnotes or additional bibliography. It is preferred to use Chicago Style or Turabian citation. Be aware of the college’s plagiarism policy. Most importantly, papers must be proofread for minor composition and grammatical errors before turning in the final draft. Avoid Slang and contractions. It is recommended that students who may have difficulty writing their paper seek assistance with the instructor or visit the Tutorial Center.
